Part 8: Bringing It All Together
Seven parts ago, this started as a question: could an old Dell OptiPlex 5060 SFF — a business desktop, not a gaming machine — actually be turned into something capable of PS3 and Xbox 360 emulation?
This part is the answer. The final hardware list, what it actually cost, how everything performed once it all came together, and an honest look at whether this project was worth doing.

That GPU line is worth restating plainly one more time: it’s physically limited to a PCIe 3.0 x4 connection rather than the x16 the card is capable of, because the PSU sits directly in the path of the only x16 slot on this board, leaving just 1–2cm of clearance. That single physical constraint shaped a good chunk of the troubleshooting across this whole series.
What It Actually Cost
Reusing hardware was the whole point of this project, and the final numbers reflect that.

The only cost I can put a confident figure against is the GPU. Everything else going into this build was hardware I already had sitting around, which was the entire premise back in Part 1 — this genuinely was not a “spend hundreds of pounds on a gaming PC” project, it was “how far can existing hardware go with one deliberate purchase.”
What It Would Cost to Build From Scratch
Since most of this build relied on hardware I already owned, it’s worth answering the question a new reader will actually have: what would this cost if you were starting with nothing?
I’ve priced out equivalent parts, including a better-specced OptiPlex than my starting point (i7 already fitted, 32GB RAM rather than 16GB, a 512GB NVMe, and a proper PSU as standard — no separate PSU upgrade needed) and a cheaper SATA drive in place of the NAS-grade IronWolf I happened to have spare, since that’s genuinely unnecessary for this use case as I flagged back in Part 1.
Prices below were accurate at the time of checking and will vary — Amazon pricing shifts often, so treat these as a snapshot rather than something to hold me to months from now.
A few notes on that table:
- The mini keyboard earns its place here for a very specific reason that came up in Part 7: Xenia’s built-in performance overlay is toggled with a genuine keyboard hotkey (H), not a controller binding. I’d been using this keyboard throughout the whole build anyway for SSH work, BIOS access, and general Batocera navigation — worth budgeting for one even if you don’t think you’ll need it for typing, since Batocera setups like this one aren’t purely controller-driven in practice.
- Buying the newer OptiPlex config outright actually beats my own starting spec — 32GB RAM instead of 16GB, and no need for a separate PSU upgrade since a better one comes standard. If you’re starting from scratch rather than reusing an old machine, this is arguably a better foundation than the one I began this series with.
- The Maxsun alternative pushes the total over £1,000 — more than double the MSI card’s price on its own. Given what we found in Part 3 (it would have avoided the x4 slot constraint entirely) and Part 7 (the x4 slot likely only mattered for one title, RDR), that’s a steep premium to pay purely to solve a problem that turned out to be fairly contained in practice. For most people replicating this build, I’d stick with the MSI card and accept the x4 limitation.
Either way, that’s the real number if you’re starting from nothing. It’s worth being honest about how it stacks up against the obvious alternative, though: an actual second-hand PS3 or Xbox 360, plus a decent stack of physical games, can be picked up for a fraction of £788 — this build was never really about being the cheapest route into these libraries. It’s about the other things emulation gets you that original hardware doesn’t: everything running off one machine, faster load times, save states, upscaling, and not being at the mercy of ageing console hardware or increasingly worn discs.
PS3 Results — The Real Highlight

Six playable-or-better results out of nine titles tested, including two (AC2, God of War III) that outperformed their own official compatibility status on this specific hardware. That’s a genuinely strong outcome for a business desktop with one bolted-on low-profile GPU.
Xbox 360 Results — Still Finding Its Feet
Xbox 360 emulation via Xenia Canary is at an earlier stage of this project, and it shows.

Compared with PS3, Xbox 360 has been noticeably harder to configure and less forgiving overall — fewer titles working cleanly, more patch-hunting required just to get a baseline result, and the one working title (Halo 3) still isn’t fully stable. I’d class this side of the build as a genuine early-stage win rather than a finished result.
The PCIe x4 Slot: Final Verdict
Coming back to this one more time, since it ran through so much of this series.
For most of the library tested, the x4 slot simply wasn’t the bottleneck — lighter titles ran cleanly regardless, and the link itself measured healthy at full PCIe Gen 3 speed under load. RDR is the one title where I genuinely can’t rule it out as a contributing factor alongside the CPU, given how much worse its result was than a CPU-only explanation would predict. For a build defined by working within someone else’s proprietary Small Form Factor design, that’s a reasonable trade-off — not the answer I wanted, but an honest one.
What I’d Do Differently
A few honest notes with the benefit of hindsight:
- The Maxsun RTX 3050 SLP 6G considered back in Part 3 — a genuine single-slot card that would have fit the x16 slot — would likely have been the technically better choice, if I’d known upfront the x16 slot wasn’t usable anyway. Cost was the deciding factor at the time, and I don’t think that was the wrong call given the information available, but it’s worth flagging for anyone doing a similar build with this exact chassis.
- Checking PSU-to-slot clearance before ordering a GPU, not after, would have saved some of the troubleshooting in Part 3 entirely. This is specific enough to the OptiPlex 5060 SFF that it’s worth calling out directly for anyone attempting this build: measure that clearance first.
- Xbox 360 support deserved more runway before publishing results on it — PS3 emulation on this machine had months of familiarity behind it by the time I wrote Part 7; Xenia had days. The comparison between the two platforms in this build says as much about how much time I’d spent with each as it does about the emulators themselves.
Was It Worth It?
Yes — with a caveat that matters.
If you’re starting where I actually started, with most of this hardware already sitting around, this was absolutely worth doing. One GPU purchase, a handful of upgrades from spare parts, and a lot of configuration work turned a Dell office PC into a machine that runs the vast majority of the PS2/GameCube/Dreamcast range without a second thought, handles a genuinely impressive slice of the PS3 library including several titles that “shouldn’t” run well on paper, and has Xbox 360 emulation off the ground even if it’s not there yet.
But the “What It Would Cost to Build From Scratch” numbers above are the honest reality check on that. If you don’t already own an OptiPlex-class machine, a spare drive, and some of these smaller parts, the costs climb quickly — and once you’re paying full price for everything, it stops being the cheap, opportunistic project it was for me and starts being a genuine spend worth comparing against your other options.
It’s also not a machine that plays every PS3 or Xbox 360 game perfectly — Gran Turismo 6 and Army of TWO: The Devil’s Cartel are proof of that, and those are emulator-side limitations no amount of settings tweaking on my end was going to solve. But that was never really the bar. The bar was: starting mostly from what I already had, can an old OptiPlex become a genuinely capable retro machine? It can — just go in with realistic expectations about what it’d cost if you’re not in the same starting position I was.
